Sometimes, voter suppression looks like a closed polling place. Or an hours-long line at the next-nearest location. Or early-voting sites that aren’t open outside of the work week.
And sometimes, it looks like an attempt to overhaul a state constitution when voters are least expecting it.
Louisiana lawmakers are asking voters to approve a partial rewrite of the state’s constitution when fewer than 15% of registered voters are expected to show up. One of those measures, Amendment 3, would give politicians more power to send kids to adult prisons and jails. Here are a few quick things to know:
- State lawmakers would have a blank check to expand the list of crimes that prosecutors can charge kids as adults for.
- Not even its author can explain which crimes she’d want to add to that list.
- More kids could face unsafe conditions and higher risks of abuse in adult prisons. According to research, they’d also become more likely to reoffend.
Political insiders think they can rewrite Louisiana’s constitution without most voters even realizing they have a say.
Not so fast.
In Louisiana, a coalition called No To Them All, Y’all has come together to defeat Amendment 3 and the three other misleading attempts to rewrite parts of the state’s constitution up for a vote March 29.
With Election Day coming up on Saturday, No To Them All, Y’all is racing to get information in the hands of as many voters as possible.
