Dear Redwoods Supporter,

We have exciting news to share—and wanted you to hear it first.

We are pleased to announce that conservation leader Steve Mietz will join Save the Redwoods League as our new president and CEO on April 28. Steve brings extensive experience in redwood forest restoration, expertise in building strong coalitions, and an inspiring leadership style that will drive the League’s bold conservation vision in the years ahead.

“Over the past decade, I have become an unapologetic champion for the redwoods,” says Steve. “I am inspired to focus all my energy on healing the forest and advancing the League’s high-impact goals amid the unique challenges and opportunities of our times.”

A veteran of the National Park Service, Steve Mietz (pronounced “Mets”) has held leadership positions at national parks across the country. He has led particularly innovative and impactful work in the fog-shrouded forests of Redwood National and State Parks, where he served as superintendent for nearly eight years. He guided large-scale landscape projects, oversaw scientific research, and managed hundreds of employees serving thousands of acres and millions of visitors annually. [SM1] In 2022, he was honored as Superintendent of the Year for Natural Resource Stewardship, in recognition of those who “go above and beyond in their duties toward resource protection.”

Steve has proven himself a trusted, visionary partner on key projects with Save the Redwoods League. He helped spearhead Redwoods Rising, an ambitious collaboration with the League and California State Parks that is breathing new life into 70,000 acres of previously logged redwood forest. He also built important tribal relationships, working with the Yurok Tribe, the League, and State Parks to establish a groundbreaking model for Indigenous land management at ‘O Rew Redwoods Gateway.

Steve’s ability to cultivate meaningful partnerships and his audacious optimism about what is possible make him an ideal leader to navigate the ever-changing conservation landscape. He joins the League as we are poised to accelerate the pace and scale of redwood conservation, building on our broad public support, a robust ecosystem of partners, a strong financial position, and a clear vision for success. His predecessor, Sam Hodder, will step down March 31 after 11 years of dedicated service.

Steve was the board’s unanimous choice for CEO, and we are thrilled to have someone with his entrepreneurial vision, incredible track record of leadership, and passionate commitment to conservation. The League will benefit enormously from his extensive relationships with government agencies, tribal groups, and redwood landowners, as well as his deep expertise in redwood forest management and restoration. He will be instrumental not only in preserving our ancient forests, but in restoring resilience and beauty across the redwood range.

Please join us in warmly welcoming Steve Mietz to our redwood community.
