Friends, I’ve gotten a lot of questions recently about what people can do to protect our democracy in this current moment.
As someone who worked in international conflict resolution and post conflict stabilization, I’m telling you from experience that the most important thing you can do is to stay in community, join a group, and keep making your voices heard. We’ll have more specific actions for you soon. But in the meantime, there’s something you can do right now:
There are five special elections for House seats coming up, two of which are already scheduled – and if we win these, we can narrow the already razor-thin GOP majority or even flip the House.
It’s not going to be easy. The special elections that are scheduled for April 1st in Florida are both in ruby red districts that would normally be easy wins for the Republican candidates. But we aren’t living in normal times – so we need to take every opportunity we’ve got to fight back against extremism.
And it’s working. Trump henchman Steve Bannon sounded the alarm for Republicans last week when he said on his radio show – talking about Florida’s 6th Congressional District – “Trump won that district by 30 points in November…and we have a candidate that I don’t think is winning. That’s an issue.”
After the Florida elections, there will be another special in New York’s 21st Congressional District – the seat Rep. Elise Stefanik will officially vacate after her anticipated confirmation as U.N. Ambassador in early April.
I’ll always be honest with you, and honestly winning these races are long shots. If you have limited resources, there are probably better investments. But Democrats Gay Valimont and Josh Weil in Florida and Blake Gendebien in New York are working hard to flip these three seats, and as we all know, resources can make a huge difference in voter turnout. And crazier things have happened.
Plus, If we win all three, Republicans would be left with just a one-seat majority in the House – making every vote harder for them, and making it easier for us to stop their most extreme pushes.
