Dear SPUC supporter
Today, March 25th, 2025, we commemorate the 30th anniversary of Evangelium Vitae (The Gospel of Life), Pope John Paul II’s seminal 1995 encyclical. The 30th anniversary is significant because it marks three decades since the value and inviolability of human life was promoted and defended in such a compelling and coherent way. Evangelium Vitae remains one of the most important Church documents addressing the sanctity of life, particularly in opposition to abortion, euthanasia, and the culture of death.

Why is the 30th anniversary important?

The anniversary of the publication of Evangelium Vitae, offers us a chance to: Reaffirm the Culture of Life - The encyclical called for a global commitment to a “culture of life” in contrast to a “culture of death.” In today’s world, issues like assisted suicide, embryo research, and abortion laws continue to challenge the vision of a “culture of life”.

Reflect on Progress and Challenges - The anniversary is an opportunity to assess how the pro-life movement has advanced and where new threats to life have emerged, particularly with changing laws and social attitudes.

The anniversary of Evangelium Vitae serves as a moment for all of us involved in the pro-life movement, to recommit to the defence of human life, from conception to natural death, in response to the ongoing threats of abortion, euthanasia, and assisted suicide.

The past 30 years have seen both victories and setbacks in pro-life advocacy. This milestone is an opportunity to evaluate how society has responded to the call for a “culture of life” and consider where renewed efforts are needed.

Crucially, we must encourage a New Generation of Defenders of Life. Young pro-life advocates who will defend the principles of human dignity and actively promote them in the modern world. Over the past 30 years, SPUC has actively led and engaged in numerous initiatives to advocate for the protection of unborn life. From funding pro-life legal cases to educational outreach and post-abortion counselling

We are the world’s first and the UK’s largest pro-life campaigning and educational organisation, we value every human life, from conception to natural death.

With your support we can continue to fight to create the “culture of life” promoted so coherently in Evangelium Vitae.

I would also like to take this opportunity to share a brief pro-life reflection I offered last night, as part of the national (Scotland) online Stations of the Cross this Lent, hosted by the Archdiocese of St Andrews & Edinburgh. Let's make no bones about it, the pro-life struggle is one that is fundamentally uphill in nature, but we should take significant consolation from the perseverance that Our Lord showed when walking the Way of the Cross.
