Friends, you’ve likely seen the explosive news story about Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, Vice President JD Vance, and more than a dozen other national security officials sharing sensitive, classified intelligence in a group chat on the unclassified messaging app Signal.

I’m gravely concerned by these reports. These conversations not only appeared to be in violation of basic security protocols, they included a reporter in the group chat — apparently inadvertently.

The entire debacle demonstrates an astonishingly cavalier attitude towards our national security and is an egregious breach of public trust.

This goes beyond incompetence — it shows an appalling carelessness for the lives of servicemembers and intelligence professionals involved in protecting our country and acting on our national interests.

I’ve written a letter to President Trump, alongside 13 of my Senate colleagues, demanding answers. 

We want the President to tell us: What disciplinary action will be taken against those involved in this recklessness? Will their security clearances be revoked? What other sensitive military information has been coordinated in group chats like this one? What training on the handling of sensitive information had this group received, and what remedial training is available? And so much more.

These leaders have been entrusted with the security of our entire nation — we can’t let reckless choices like this go unchecked.
