ICYMI — last week, Donald Trump signed an executive order to dismantle the Department of Education. I know, and it’s as bad as it sounds. But Mary Gay and House Dems won’t let this happen without a fight.
As a former lawyer with the Education Law Center who got her start in elected office as a school board member — Mary Gay takes this extremely seriously, and personally. Check out what she had to say below…
MARY GAY ON THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION
|
- This is unconstitutional.
Congress established and funds the Department of Education. The President’s job is to faithfully execute the laws. He doesn’t get to second-guess Congress on this.
- It’s extremely disruptive to our public education and to students and families in Pennsylvania and nationwide. The foundation of the GOP’s argument is false – the DOE is not responsible for the curriculum. That is already up to our states and our local school districts. What the DOE does is distribute funding for special education, and Title 1 for low-income students, and it manages the student loan program.
Bottom line: This is a destructive move and displays a really serious misunderstanding of what the DOE does. We need to combat it on all fronts.
I’ll be working with folks who are going to sue to block this. But it’s really important that Americans reach out to their reps and share their stories to urge them to take action.

Do you agree with Mary Gay that we should NOT be defunding special ed programs, making college more expensive, and hurting our children’s public education?

Mary Gay won’t stop using her power in Congress to fight back against this unlawful and destructive executive order. We’ll keep you posted with more updates as they unfold.
