Two months ago, almost to the day, I emailed you about how Pete Hegseth was uniquely unqualified to serve as Secretary of Defense.

Then yesterday, I learned about one of the most serious breaches of security protocol that I’ve ever heard of.

Vice President Vance, Secretary Hegseth, National Security Advisor Waltz, and virtually every single top official in our nation’s defense and intelligence operation shared and discussed classified, detailed war plans on unsecured channels — with an unauthorized member of the press included.

They accidentally added a reporter for The Atlantic to their group chat.

This kind of stuff would have any member of the military facing serious consequences. It put the lives of the pilots flying those missions at risk. Furthermore, it suggests that everyone involved from the VP down was using their personal devices, which means there are serious risks that our global competitors have accessed critical and classified information. Bottom line: This was a serious risk to our national security.

There are deep, detailed protocols for handling classified national security information like this. Each of the people in this group chat have access to SCIFs, secure rooms where you can safely discuss top-secret information. They each have access to secured systems that are resistant to hacking from our adversaries. There are laws that punish people entrusted with sensitive information like this when it is disclosed to people who are not.

This is what happens when you put deeply unqualified individuals in command. It’s dangerous. It has made each of us less safe, and it is time for a serious reevaluation of the way the Trump White House is doing things.

People should be fired.
