The legislation, ACA 5, introduced by Assembly members Shirley Weber, D-San Diego, Mike Gipson, D-Compton, and Miguel Santiago, D-Los Angeles, would place a measure on the November ballot to reverse Prop. 209. As justification, ACA 5 lays out a number of very dubious claims.

Two days later, a ballot measure that will give voters a chance to decide if app-based drivers should be exempt from AB5 qualified for the November election. It if passes, Sacramento’s capacity to reclassify rideshare drivers as employees who have to be hired, which was the primary objective of AB5, will be sharply limited. While an AB5 weakened by AB1850, introduced by the same Lorena Gonzalez who authored AB5, is better than the bill that became law, it’s an imperfect remedy.

The puzzling question is that despite the recent jump in support for Medicare for All, why is Congress or state legislatures not rushing to pass it into law? Colorado recently shelved a version of a public health insurance option. Given the pending recession and financial trauma staring down state government budgets, it’s safe to say most legislatures and governors want to avoid the expensive costs of a single-payer system for now.
