Can I tell you a story? A couple of years ago, I was meeting at a university to share about Love146’s work to combat child trafficking. As I got in my car after that meeting, my phone buzzed. It was *Brianna, a client in our U.S. Survivor Care Program. As I answered, I moved abruptly from the theoretical level of academia, into the intense realities of one young person.

Brianna’s voice was quivering. A predator from her past had been sending threatening DMs, saying that if she didn’t meet up with him, he would expose explicit details about her past to her dad.

She was scared. She had worked so hard to become free from this man and build trust with her dad.

In the past, she said she would have given in to threats like this, and part of her still wanted to, and I get it. But this time, Brianna called me to ask for help. Her solution was so incredibly brave: She asked if I would be with her as she told her dad about her victimization. This would take the power back from the predator. I was amazed at her strength!

The conversation with her dad was tough, but it went about as well as it could have. As I left, she said, “Thanks for being one of the only people who care.”

I hugged her and said,

“I know you see me and you may think I’m only one person, but I have a lot of coworkers at Love146 working hard so I can be here because they care about you. And we can only be here because there are even more people who give money and support to Love146 because they also care about you. And you may never meet any of them – but when you look at me, I want you to see the hundreds of people behind me who are supporting you because they care about you.”
