John, I first met Brad when I was 25 – more than a decade ago when I was on the Austin City Council, and Brad was a New York City Council member. I’d become active with Local Progress, a cross-country network of local elected officials fighting to reshape our communities that Brad helped found.

At the time in the Austin City Council, I represented the lowest income district in the city. With help from the coalition we built through Local Progress, I led legislation that successfully raised wages for thousands of workers and passed the first paid sick days ordinance in the South – similar to the protections Brad won for workers in NYC.

We may come from very different states, but both Brad and I have a deep love for our cities and our shared values. Now forward to 2025. Right now, the mayor of America’s largest city can set the tone for whether our cities stand and fight against Donald Trump, or cozy up to him.
