Social Security chief says White House ordered "rapid" phone service cutbacks
In a meeting with advocacy groups that are stakeholders in the Social Security Administration's disability and retirement programs, Leland Dudek flatly admitted the sweeping changes he’s pursued since becoming acting commissioner last month were dialed up by his superiors in the Trump administration. Dudek last week announced that for any transaction requiring Social Security claimants to verify their identities, starting on March 31 they will no longer be able to do so over the phone. Instead, claimants who can’t use the agency’s website will have to verify their identities in-person by visiting a field office. Democratic members of Congress and groups such as the AARP have blasted the proposed change as an unnecessary burden on seniors and people with disabilities. The disdain and contempt Donald Trump and his goons have for the very people who helped put him back in office is beyond measure. Incredibly awful stuff.

Israel assassinates journalist Hossam Shabat in targeted airstrike
Hossam Shabat, a reporter for al Jazeera and Drop Site News, was killed in a targeted Israeli assassination on Tuesday. He had been on the front lines in northern Gaza, reporting on Israel's crimes against humanity when he was hit by an IDF airstrike. Far from the usual denial, the IDF issued a statement claiming Shabat was a Hamas operative masquerading as a journalist and openly took credit for his death. Some 200 journalists have been killed by Israel since the war began. In what would be final published story, Shabat — who vigorously denied Israeli claims he was a member of Hamas — wrote: "In the first six days of this renewed military operation, northern Gaza witnessed four bloody massacres. When I arrived on the scene, I wasn't ready for the horror before my eyes. The streets were filled with the dead. Under every stone lay a martyr. Dozens were crying for help from underneath the rubble of their homes but there was no one to respond. Screams filled the air while everyone stood helpless. My tears didn't stop. The scenes were more than any human being could bear. The ambulances were filled with corpses, their bodies and limbs piled on top and intertwined with one another. We could no longer distinguish between children and men, between the injured and the dead."

Columbia student protester sues Trump administration for trying to deport her
Yunseo Chung, a 21-year-old who has lived in the United States since she was seven and is a lawful permanent resident (and high school valedictorian) has been targeted for deportation by the Trump administration for...briefly participating in Palestinian human rights protests at Columbia University. Chung has filed a lawsuit against the government in response. Just three days after New York police arrested Chung while she was participating in demonstrations at Columbia, an ICE official reportedly signed an administrative arrest warrant for her, according to the suit. The following day ICE agents went to Chung’s parents' home looking for her and days later executed search warrants at two Columbia properties, including Chung’s dorm. Chung’s suit accuses the Trump administration of a "larger pattern of attempted US government repression of constitutionally protected protest activity and other forms of speech" and states the government is seeking to "retaliate against and punish noncitizens like Ms. Chung for their participation in protests." Make no mistake, the Trump administration is dead-set on criminalizing protests for EVERYONE; the targeting of immigrants is just the foot in the door of wholesale repression.

US Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, a Trump appointee holdover from his calamitous first term, abruptly resigned from his position Monday, after reportedly refusing to give Elon Musk's DOGE goons broad access to agency computer systems. Folks, the sands have shifted so severely in MAGA land that even DeJoy, a fervent Trump backer and GOP megadonor, could no longer abide. Uh, do NOT return to sender, apparently.
