This morning, I spoke to our City Council during a special session about my plan for the Housing Opportunities Made Easy (HOME) initiative. The HOME initiative will tackle head-on Philadelphia’s housing crisis — we simply can’t afford to wait any longer. Philadelphians need more housing, and they need it now.
This issue is important to me, personally from my own lived-life experience and as a key promise I made to the City of Philadelphia when I ran for Mayor. But know that I am no Johnny-come-lately to the issue of access to housing, I have been working on it as an elected official long before it became popular to do so.
The HOME initiative is a key part of my plan to create and preserve 30,000 units of housing across our city. This is an all-hands-on-deck moment for Philadelphia, a moment that demands bold action and strong partnerships.
That’s why I proposed a historic $2 BILLION investment in housing, including an $800 million bond investment to build on existing programs that are nationally recognized and create new and innovative programs that will ensure every Philadelphian has a safe, affordable place to call home.
The HOME initiative will be the largest single investment in housing in Philadelphia history, and I am looking forward to working alongside our housing partners and City Council to meet the demand for housing at all income levels.
Let’s get to work!
One Philly, A United City
