HB 553 would broaden the definition of child abuse by replacing “safety” with vague terms like “physical, emotional, or psychological welfare.”
This shift could invite excessive government intrusion into family life, turning the Division for Children, Youth and Families into the “well-being police.”
Richard Wexler, executive director of the National Coalition for Child Protection Reform, warns that the bill “provides not one iota of additional help” to families and instead risks punishing parents for normal, everyday decisions.
