Dear John,
Tomorrow Rachel Reeves will stand
at the despatch box and deliver the Government's Spring Statement.
From what's already been leaked, we know they're facing intense
criticism - and a potential rebellion of backbench MPs - over
proposals to cut public spending by reducing payments for people with
debilitating health conditions as a way to coax them into
employment.
A return to austerity would be political
anthrax. Fortunately for Keir
Starmer, we've got an alternative - and it’s more popular with
voters.
Our latest report with Frontier Economics revealed a new UK-EU
trade deal, with deep alignment on goods and services,
could deliver up to 2.2% economic growth, equivalent to:
- 20 times
the economic boost from the Australia & New Zealand trade deals
combined;
- Up to
half the OBR's estimated -4% hit to GDP caused by Brexit clawed
back;
- Two
years of the desired increases to the NHS capital budget in monetary
terms, if used like-for-like.
|
We decided to check what voters think. And
it's more popular than what they have planned: 46% of
Brits think a new UK-EU trade deal is the better route to economic
growth, versus just 28% who
opt for cutting benefits. Crucially for the Government, nearly
two-thirds of those who voted Labour at last year's election choose stronger
trade ties over benefit reductions. |
In May, the UK will host EU leaders
for critical negotiations—the biggest reset in EU-UK relations yet.
This is our moment to demand a common sense deal that delivers real economic growth
and a better future for all.
Will you help us make this happen?

Austerity is a choice - and it's
the wrong one. As proved by 14 years of Conservative government, it's
economically shortsighted, deeply unpopular and devastating to
hundreds of thousands of vulnerable people all at once. Let's show the
government there's a better way forward - one that
protects British jobs, strengthens our economy, and
supports those who need it most.
