Let’s be clear: This is a dangerous escalation of his attacks on our judicial system.
In a new memo, Trump ordered the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Justice to go after firms who file "frivolous," “unreasonable,” or “vexatious” lawsuits against the administration. But we know the truth: He wants to scare people he sees as his political opponents into submission.
How do we know this? His orders specifically target those he considers his enemies, such as lawyers who worked with special counsel Jack Smith and Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign.
Why is he doing this? To scare and silence anyone who tries to hold him accountable. If he is successful, then lawyers will have to think twice before taking a case against his illegal actions, and it’ll be harder for the courts to stop him.
Civil rights groups across the country agree: this puts our democracy at risk.
We cannot let Trump get away with these threats. The president is not allowed to use his power to silence and intimidate people he thinks are his political opponents. Now is the time to protect the rule of law and hold Trump accountable, no matter his intimidation tactics.
