John,

Americans are concerned about what the Trump agenda is doing to our
government and our economy, but our elected leaders are in hiding. More
and more Congressional Republicans are refusing to hold town halls,
because they don’t want to answer to constituents.

That’s not how you represent people.

I held many town halls throughout my time in Congress, and to make sure I
heard from a variety of voices during each one, I would invite everyone to
submit their questions on index cards. Then, I put all the cards into a
bingo ball spinner and randomly selected questions.

I did this because as a teacher, I know that if you only call on the
loudest, highest hands—you will only be hearing the voices of a select
few. By democratizing the process of asking questions, I was able to hear
from all sorts of people.

There’s no excuse for elected officials not hearing from constituents. It
is what you sign up for when you run for office, and it’s a core part of
the job.

As Governor, I won’t hide from Californians. I’ll listen to everyone's
concerns, and I'm willing to work with anyone who has a good idea.

Republican representatives in hiding?
