[link removed] [[link removed]] John,

CREW has emailed you quite a bit over the past few weeks providing updates on our efforts to push for accountability for Donald Trump and DOGE.

Today, I wanted to reach out about a win in a much longer term, but equally important fight.

Last week, a US District Judge ruled in one of our cases against the Federal Election Commission that the Commission must report its reasons for dismissing campaign finance complaints when it votes to do so.

This is a victory against anonymous, unchecked money in politics. Let me explain why:

The ruling will make it easier for CREW and others to seek accountability in court for violations of campaign finance law if the FEC fails to enforce the law (as it often does).

CREW brought this case back in 2022 to challenge the FEC’s dismissal of a complaint we filed in 2018 against an Ohio-based dark money group called Freedom Vote, for failing to register as a political committee, which would have led to more disclosure about their donors and activities.

The FEC found overwhelming evidence that Freedom Vote violated the law, but the commission still decided not to act. We only learned later that the reason they offered for not acting was one that attempted to block court challenges to parts of the dismissal.

Going forward, the FEC will need to provide an explanation for dismissal before it votes on complaints, which will provide a measure of accountability and transparency to what has been an opaque process.

Defending our democracy means tackling the corrosive impact of unchecked anonymous money in our elections. Can you support that long term work with a recurring donation today? [[link removed]]MAKE A MONTHLY DONATION → [[link removed]]
