The Arlington Young Democrats are reaching out because the past few weeks have been extremely difficult as we continue to grieve for George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and countless other members of the Black community whose lives have been cut horrifically short due to police brutality and systemic racism. Our country is burning. Our people are hurting. But we must remember that this level of brutality and disenfranchisement is happening to people of color every week in America, unrecorded, even when it is not front and center of the public eye.

That is why we must act. We must speak out. We must make sure people know that Black lives are valuable and indispensable and help create sustainable change in our society and institutions that show that Black. Lives. Matter. Not every form of civic engagement looks the same, but we must all find a way to contribute and keep the momentum going.

With numerous avenues to take a stand, we created a challenge racial injustice resource guide [[link removed]] . While protesting in person is not an option for everyone, you can contact representatives, sign petitions, make donations, get out the vote, and consume anti-racist media [[link removed]*NBC-qqt7MaIyXvcbpzzGwg] as actionable alternatives. If you would like to participate in in-person civic engagement, contact Dan Goldberg at (610) 457-0591.

In addition, the Arlington Young Democrats Executive Board has written and passed a resolution on racial justice [[link removed]] to be voted on by the general body at a later date. It is our hope that you will review, and later, accept this resolution. We have also decided to cancel this week’s happy hour and movie night to refocus our efforts where they are needed most. We will, however, still have our phone banking event for Takis Karantonis [[link removed]] this Friday, June 5th at 7 pm because we believe that getting out the vote aligns with this effort.

If you have any questions or would like to join our newly formed Diversity & Inclusion Committee, please contact AYD Secretary and D&I Chair Maya Jones at [email protected] [[email protected]] .
