Dear John,

It was quite a sight to behold: three teen girls boldly speaking truth to a committee of adults, under attack from some of those same adults for daring to stand up for what they believe.

It reminded me of David’s story, and how his faith in God prompted him to face Goliath when no one else would stand up. I’m delighted to share with you the story of three young ladies who are following David’s example today.

They inspire me, and I know they will inspire you too. We should all consider what our part is, and what kind of impact we can make. One way that I know you can make a difference in the crucial issues and challenges of today is by supporting Minnesota Family Council and True North Legal financially.

As we continue the fight on the issue of girls’ sports and many others to come in the remaining 9 weeks of session, will you prayerfully consider a gift of $25, $50, $100 or even more, as the Lord leads, to fuel our continued efforts to promote legislation that makes Minnesota a safer, fairer place to live for all of us?

Your generous support would be an encouragement to me, and more importantly to the courageous young ladies who need to know that Minnesotans stand behind them. My team was at the Capitol alongside them, leading the charge on House File 12, the Preserve Girls’ Sports bill, which prohibits boys from participating on girls’ sports teams in Minnesota through high school.

Seeing my team members and these young athletes stand strong in the face of attacks from hostile legislators during the hearing, I couldn’t help but think of a teenage David, sent to bring provisions to his brothers on the frontlines of the war with the Philistines. He heard the taunts of Goliath and wondered why no one was doing anything about this disgrace or standing up to this man who was “defying the armies of the living God” (1 Samuel 17:26).

Ignoring the opposition from his own brother, he appealed to King Saul, who was willing to send David into the fray, either because he trusted David or God, or because he too was afraid of Goliath and unwilling to face him himself. Or maybe it was a little of both.

All we know for sure is that in an army of thousands, only a teenage shepherd boy had the courage of his convictions and enough faith in God to do what seemed impossible in the eyes of men.

David began by choosing his ammunition, and so did we. In this case, that ammunition was scientific facts, legal precedents and eyewitness accounts, and we carefully built a team that could provide a solid case in support of House File 12, making clear that only girls belong in girls’ sports.

I want to tell you more about the hearing, but first, would you consider supporting MFC’s work as we seek to protect girls’ sports and fight for life, family, and religious freedom in Minnesota? We’re able to fight for your values because we receive generous financial support from people like you. As the legislative session comes to a head, will you consider a gift of $25, $50, $100 or even more, as the Lord leads, to help us promote legislation that makes Minnesota a safer, fairer place to live for all of us?

At the hearing, True North Legal’s General Counsel Renee Carlson, who is an experienced lawyer and a regular voice in House and Senate committee rooms, led off with the legal history of this issue, appealing to the decades-long precedent of Title IX and the critical need to protect women and girls.

Our Public Policy Director, Rebecca Delahunt, emphasized the injustice of boys taking away opportunities from girls, and the risks that both girls and their coaches incur when they dare to speak out against it.

That’s why the in-person testimonies of the current student athletes were so striking. They are the very girls in need of this protection, and they risked ostracization by coaches, teammates and friends by speaking out against an injustice that far too many people still naively support.

There are too many stories of girls missing out on roster spots, medals, championships, and scholarships because they’ve been bested by males who have undeniable physiological advantages. Even worse are the stories of girls who have been severely injured by male athletes, such as the one shared by the mother whose daughter suffered a broken arm, resulting in a permanent limitation of function.

Their bold testimony helped pass the bill out of the House committee, but wasn’t enough to ensure the bill’s passage on the House floor, as it fell short by one vote with every single DFL legislator voted against the measure. In response, our allies strategically tabled the bill. They have the option to bring it back up for vote later this year or next year, once the outlook for passage is better.

And we are confident that day is coming. It’s important to remember that legislation isn’t always measured by “yes” and “no” votes. We seized a moment of opportunity and gained ground on this issue because the merits of this bill were clearly articulated both inside and outside the committee room and House chamber, thanks to Renee, Rebecca, the bill author, Representative Peggy Scott, and our whole slate of testifiers…but especially these brave young ladies.

All these efforts are fueled by supporters like you. Your generosity makes it possible for us to be here, engaged full-time in these important efforts. That’s why we’re asking once again for your investment in MFC, MFI and our legal advocacy affiliate, True North Legal, with a gift of $25, $50, $100 or even more, if you are able.

Thank you for all the ways you demonstrate that you are behind us in these important battles, which reminds us that the Lord is also with us, for us and empowering us for the fights to which He has called us.
