It may sound strange to say that much of FIRST THINGS’ success across thirty-five years can be attributed to prejudice. Let me explain.
Richard John Neuhaus introduced FIRST THINGS’ March 1990 founding editorial as a “statement of editorial prejudices” that ground and inform what is published in FIRST THINGS.
After thirty-five years, these prejudices remain unchanged:
We fulfill our humanity when we honor God’s authority.
Religion is the foundation of culture.
A free society must be anchored in moral truth.
The spiritual and intellectual life is about more, far more, than politics.
Reader, the voice of FIRST THINGS has never been more needed. And it is your charitable support—your special first gift to FIRST THINGS—that will amplify this voice for the next thirty-five years.
Toward this end, my colleagues and I are requesting something a bit different with this inaugural Founder’s Appeal. Will you set up a monthly, recurring gift to FIRST THINGS today?
Your first gift of $10, $25, or even $50 or more a month will secure the future of FIRST THINGS and advance the principles upon which Richard John Neuhaus founded FIRST THINGS.
Or, if your means allow, a monthly gift of at least $84 will confer membership in the Editor’s Circle by year-end!
