On Thursday, March 27, the Census Bureau will release a new summary report and data tables for the 2024 Annual Survey of Public Employment and Payroll [ [link removed] ]. These statistics provide a comprehensive look at the employment of the nation’s state and local governments and gross monthly payroll for March 2024.
Also on Thursday, the Census Bureau will release data from the Annual Survey of State and Local Government Finances [ [link removed] ] summarizing state government finances in fiscal year 2023. Tables include data for each state, along with detailed information on revenue sources, spending, and debt.

America Counts: Only 50 U.S. Counties Had Populations Over a Million in 2024 [ [link removed] ]
Fifty U.S. counties or 1.6% of the nation's 3,144 counties had at least one million people on July 1, 2024, more than double the number (23) in 1970.
