We can’t allow the right-wing to use pandemic deficit fearmongering to achieve their long-held goals of cutting Social Security and Medicare.

John,

While the Senate is dragging its feet, the US economy continues to crater. Experts predict that the economic contraction in the last quarter is four times worse than the worst of the Great Recession.1 The Senate isn’t planning to pass any new assistance until July, at the earliest.

And new reporting indicates that Mitt Romney is pushing hard2 to include a fast-track process to cut Social Security and Medicare behind closed doors, while eliminating the unemployment insurance expansion that has sustained the 43 million people put out of work by the pandemic.

Now, 60 members of the House have written a letter in support of Romney’s dangerous idea. We can’t allow the right-wing to use pandemic deficit fearmongering to achieve their long-held goals of cutting Social Security and Medicare.

Romney’s proposal is part of a larger Republican war on seniors. Together, we’re sounding the alarm and fighting back! Chip in $7 today!

Progressives have called for measures to sustain working people through the pandemic―expanded unemployment insurance, PPP aid to small businesses, and increasing Social Security benefits for seniors. And importantly, we’ve called for these benefits to continue automatically for the duration of the economic crisis, so that they can’t be held hostage by Republicans after the election, as they were in 2009.

Republicans oppose these “automatic stabilizers,” but Mitt’s TRUST Act works similarly. It’s just that, instead of protecting working people from politicians playing games with their lives, it protects politicians from the consequences of their decisions―creating a way for them to cut Social Security and Medicare behind closed doors.

Americans are in the streets now, protesting unaccountable police violence. The pandemic is still killing at least one thousand Americans every day. The President and some of his allies in the Senate are threatening to sic the military on people exercising their First Amendment rights.

This country has real problems. If members of Congress don’t want to help fix them, they should resign.

We’re working to shine a light on this insidious proposal, and make sure that Romney can’t use the chaos of the Trump administration as cover for his de-stabilizing proposal. Chip in today to BLOCK Romney’s Social Security and Medicare cuts!

Thanks,

Alex Lawson
