Dear Friend,
For decades, PETA has used protests and marches, among other tactics, in the fight to end speciesism and human supremacy. Today, we stand in solidarity with the protests and marches to end racism and white supremacy, so we welcome everyone to participate in the movement to end systemic oppression and to stop senseless violence by joining a local protest this weekend.
Most major cities will have both spontaneous and organized events, so check out your local Black Lives Matter (BLM) website or social media page for the latest information. Right now, protests are being announced a day or even an hour in advance, so you may have to keep checking.
Note: There are many excellent anti-racist groups organizing events besides BLM. However, there have been reports of white-supremacist groups creating fake events, so please do your due diligence to verify the legitimacy of protests before participating.
We suggest wearing a PETA or another animal rights T-shirt to show solidarity between our movements and bringing a handmade poster or sign with a unifying message. Here are some examples:
We've chosen these slogans to show our support without detracting from the message of ending racism. As vegans, we understand that oppression and violence against ANYONE are indefensible, but it's important that we refrain from doing anything that can be perceived as co-opting these vital protests.
Send photos of yourself and your signs in action to [email protected], as we may feature some on our website and social media accounts.
If you're going to protest, try your best to be safe, wear a mask, maintain social distancing, and avoid confrontations. Remember that this country was founded on civil disobedience and that civil means polite, restrained, and dignified—please stay away from anyone who is destroying property. This is an important time, and we are proud of anyone who is speaking out.
Thank you for playing a part in improving our society!
Sincerely,
|
