Law Enforcement News 2 LAPD Officers Suffer Major Injuries In Horrific South Los Angeles Collision Two Los Angeles Police Department officers suffered major injuries after their patrol vehicle was involved in a horrific crash in South Los Angeles late Wednesday night. By Thursday morning, one of the LAPD officers was listed in critical condition, while the other was listed in serious condition. Two other people involved in the crash were also hurt. Officers responded to the area of Main Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard just before 10 p.m. after receiving a call for help. While crossing the intersection, the LAPD patrol SUV collided with a tow truck. It is believed the driver of the tow truck ran a red light, authorities said. During this current crisis, our officers have shown great calm, restraint, and professionalism. The Mayor knows this, so it is unclear why he paraded these issues out as reforms. What some politicians and their appointees have shown is craven political opportunism and posturing all under the guise of deflecting from their own culpability for the conditions in Los Angeles. We saw absolute panic tonight from our elected and appointed officials. We would suggest that the Mayor and his new appointee to the police commission do their homework before dragging the men and women of the Los Angeles Police Department through the mud." LAPPL NYPD Officer Stabbed In Neck, 2 Others Shot In Ambush The NYPD says an officer was stabbed in the neck and two others were shot late Wednesday night in Brooklyn. All three are expected to survive. The suspect is in critical condition. Police said two officers were assigned to prevent looting around the area of Church and Flatbush avenues in the Flatbush neighborhood. Around 11:45 p.m., a man allegedly walked up to the officers, took out a knife and stabbed one of them in the left side of the neck. Police said he then stole a gun from the officers. Two others responded after hearing gunshots and were both wounded. NBC 4 Looters Ransack 118-Year-Old Music Store In DTLA Employees at The International House of Music, Inc., started cleaning up the shattered glass and destruction left by looters after the store was ransacked Saturday night. "We just went through COVID and we were just barely about a week opening in, trying to get back in, trying to get our employees back in," said Oscar Naranjo Jr., co-owner of the store. "We got to move forward and now with this, it's hard." The owners estimate hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of merchandise was stolen from the music store. "It's mixed feelings because they didn't take everything, they didn't burn it down. So, we're grateful for one thing," said Naranjo. "But the reality is they did ... it's not just on TV anymore, it's real." ABC 7 61 Facing Criminal Charges, Mostly For Looting, During L.A. Protests: DA’s Office Criminal charges have been filed against dozens of people, mostly for looting, following a week of racial unrest across the Los Angeles area, prosecutors said Wednesday. So far, 61 people are being prosecuted, and additional cases are expected to be filed this week, L.A. County District Attorney Jackie Lacey said in a news release. “I support the peaceful organized protests that already have brought needed attention to racial inequality throughout our society, including in the criminal justice system,” Lacey said. “I also have a constitutional and ethical duty to protect the public and prosecute people who loot and vandalize our community.” KTLA 5 Ex-Fundraiser At Los Angeles City Hall Pleads Guilty To Bribery A former Los Angeles City Hall fundraiser pleaded guilty Wednesday, June 3, to a federal bribery charge for arranging a $500,000 bribe for a council member. Justin Kim, 53, is the first of four defendants to formally plead guilty in the ongoing, so-called pay-to-play public-corruption probe. Kim entered his plea by videoconference to a single count, which carries a prison sentence of up to 10 years. Sentencing was set for Aug. 17. When his plea agreement was filed with the court in March, the Mar Vista man agreed to cooperate with the investigation. The council member in Kim’s case was not identified, but details in court papers point to Jose Huizar. Los Angeles Daily News Looters Drive Off With $90,000 Muscle Cars In San Leandro Over Weekend, Police Say As protests over the death of Minneapolis man George Floyd turned violent Sunday night, hundreds of looters targeted a car dealership in San Leandro. By the time police arrived, scores of cars had filed out of the parking lot: Dodge Chargers, Jeep Wranglers, Jeep Cherokees. All told, nearly 80 cars were stolen, with some being driven out right in front of police. Looters even drove off in high-end Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcats, which sell for about $90,000 each, authorities said. “Looters [were] vandalizing the store or even burglarizing the store, getting access to the keys, and taking cars,” San Leandro Police Lt. Ted Henderson said. So far, about 30 of the stolen vehicles have been located, and some are damaged, police said. Los Angeles Times AP Tally: Arrests At Widespread US Protests Hit 10,000 More than 10,000 people have been arrested in protests decrying racism and police brutality in the wake of George Floyd’s death, according to an Associated Press tally of known arrests across the U.S. The count has grown by the hundreds each day as protesters spilled into the streets and encountered a heavy police presence and curfews that give law enforcement stepped-up arrest powers. Los Angeles has had more than a quarter of the national arrests, followed by New York, Dallas and Philadelphia. Many of the arrests have been for low-level offenses such as curfew violations and failure to disperse. Hundreds were arrested on burglary and looting charges. As cities were engulfed in unrest last week, politicians claimed that the majority of the protesters were outside agitators, including a contention by Minnesota’s governor that 80 percent of the participants in the demonstrations were from out of state. Associated Press Public Safety News LA Public Works Crews Collect Hundreds Of Tons Of Trash, Remove Graffiti After Protests The Los Angeles Department of Public Works said Wednesday that its staff and hundreds of volunteers collected nearly 400 tons of trash between Friday and Tuesday, after protests against police brutality. “As we continue to provide services and support during a global pandemic, I’m proud of the dedicated members of our Department of Public Works family, who have once again stepped up and acted swiftly to aid in the city’s emergency efforts,” said Los Angeles Board of Public Works President Kevin James. “This has been a huge undertaking, and I want to thank our employees and the community members who joined us in cleaning up our city.” Public Works crews have also been removing graffiti. Los Angeles Daily News Los Angeles County Reports 1,155 New Coronavirus Cases, 46 Additional Deaths Los Angeles County on Wednesday reported 1,155 new coronavirus cases and 46 additional deaths, bringing the totals to 58,234 cases and 2,489 deaths. Thirty-four people who died were over the age of 65 years old; six people who died were between the ages of 41 and 65 years old, and one person who died was between the ages of 18 and 40 years old. Twelve people were reported to have underlying health conditions including 11 people over the age of 65 years old and one person between the ages of 41 to 65 years old. The information on the remaining deaths was not immediately available. The Los Angeles County Public Health Department lists the race and ethnicity data associated with COVID-19 deaths on its website.
