Hi John.

Every family wants what’s best for their children. And a key part of that is ensuring that every child can access a great education. That requires strong parental involvement and local control of our public schools.

But the last thing anyone needs right now are possible teacher layoffs or larger class sizes. Unfortunately, last week President Trump ordered the dismantling of the U.S. Department of Education. I do not support gutting public education to pay for a tax give away for billionaires.

Whether we agree on this issue or not, it's important to me to hear from you. My job is to serve everyone, regardless of party. I hope you'll click below to begin taking my survey to share your views >>

In Kansas, we've already seen what happens when politicians take a wrecking ball to public education. Just look at what happened during the Brownback era. That led to teacher shortages, overcrowded class sizes, and crumbling schools.

I respect the role of states in shaping their education systems. But the U.S. Department of Education fills critical gaps. That includes ensuring students with disabilities get the support they need. It also helps rural schools stay afloat and keeps our nation competitive with places like China.

Congress can, and should, always make improvements at any federal agency or program. But I do not agree with recklessly eliminating the Department of Education. I believe it's wrong to cut education funding to pay for a tax giveaway for billionaires.
