John,
Cutting $2 trillion in human needs funding to pay for making Trump’s tax scam permanent will devastate tens of millions of households across the country.
Programs like Medicaid and SNAP are largely funded with federal dollars and administered by the states. Some policymakers are trying to hide their large cuts by passing on the costs to states and localities, which would mean states would have to slash these and other services, cutting people off from programs that save lives and make our communities stronger.
The House Republican budget proposes cutting $230 billion from SNAP, which would force every state in the country to reduce benefits sharply and remove vulnerable people from the rolls completely.1 Not only would people have a tougher time with higher food and health costs, but this could decimate state and local budgets, putting a squeeze on everything from education to public safety―while also decimating rural hospitals and grocery stores.
They propose to gut health services too, trying to disguise their proposed $880 billion in cuts to Medicaid by making states pick up the tab.2
Right-wing politicians are trying to use the budget reconciliation process to pass these dangerous proposals because it would allow them to bypass a Senate filibuster and cut trillions of dollars in basic needs programs to pay for tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy through a simple majority vote.
We need to keep the pressure on Congress to reject cuts to programs that people need and that have traditionally enjoyed bipartisan support. Donate $5 today to increase our grassroots activism and in-person lobbying efforts on Capitol Hill and remind lawmakers that constituents don’t want them to cut health care and food aid, and especially not to pay for tax breaks for the rich.

John,
Budget reconciliation is a process that allows Congress to pass bills making changes in tax policy and in basic needs programs like Medicaid or SNAP without risking a Senate filibuster―that means the Senate can pass such bills with only 51 votes, not 60. And that’s exactly what House and Senate leadership are trying to do in order to pass legislation that guts human needs programs by trillions of dollars in order to pay for permanent tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy and corporations.
Together, we’re working to stop this massive transfer of wealth from communities who have the least to households who have the most. Already, we’ve sent hundreds of thousands of messages to Congress letting them know that the American people won’t accept cuts to critical programs to fund more tax breaks for billionaires.
Our grassroots activism and in-person lobbying are only possible with your support. Donate $5 today so we can continue the fight for vulnerable families and communities.

The budget resolution passed by the House proposes cutting $2 trillion in non-defense spending in exchange for making the 2017 Trump tax scam permanent, a whopping $4.5 trillion hole in the budget.1 They would pay for some of this $4.5 trillion tax break, mostly for the ultra-wealthy and large corporations, by gutting the funding of critical programs like Medicaid, the Affordable Care Act, SNAP, and other basic needs programs. And they’ll lie about it, saying they’re getting rid of “government waste.”
Trump, Musk and their congressional allies are waging multi-front attacks on our government and communities. They’ve started by making it harder to apply for or renew benefits, by slashing staff and closing offices around the country. The victims? Among them: people with disabilities, older adults, rural residents, low-wage workers, children. That’s just the start, though. This past Thursday they announced plans to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education―which will lead to even more teacher shortages in rural and urban schools while children with disabilities will find their access to essential classroom supports weakened or blocked.2 The upcoming bills to pay for huge tax breaks for the wealthy with cuts to Medicaid, SNAP, and other basic needs programs will hurt millions of people. Right-wingers and billionaire campaign donors may want this, but the American people do not. Help us fight back. The actions we take now will determine the kind of future we’re able to provide for our children and grandchildren.
