** Moving beyond token-ism to engage young people in decision-making for better transport
------------------------------------------------------------
Hello Supporter
Here, Gemma Bridge, PhD, shares her insights and learning from the Engaging Young People in Consultations (EYPiC) project...
"Engaging young people in local decision-making is crucial for building communities that reflect the needs and aspirations of all generations. Despite being a longstanding practice, current consultation methods across England often function as token gestures – box-ticking exercises that fail to provide young people with a genuine voice in shaping transport policies and local infrastructure. This shortfall is especially significant given that young people are major users of public transport and the future stewards of our communities.
The existing consultation model typically offers low participation, where public input is collected without real influence over decisions. Most young people are unsure how to engage, and those that do, report that their contributions are ignored or undervalued, leading to a disconnect between community needs and the policies that affect them. Consequently, critical issues such as affordability, accessibility, and sustainable urban mobility remain inadequately addressed.
At EYPiC, our mission is to transform this approach by developing practical resources that empower and enable local authorities to engage young people meaningfully. Central to our work is the EYPiC Toolkit – a set of recommendations, an implementation checklist, and evaluation and reflection resources designed to help local decision-makers build flexible, inclusive consultation processes. The toolkit advocates for using young person friendly communication, integrating digital tools and creative engagement methods, and involving young people at every stage – from planning and execution to reflection and evaluation. This comprehensive approach not only increases the relevance and effectiveness of consultations but also builds long-term trust and accountability.
By shifting from tokenistic consultations to genuine, participatory decision-making, we can ensure that young voices truly shape the future of transport and local governance."
