Donald Trump was elected largely because Americans thought the economy was lousy, and he promised to fix it.

Now, just over eight weeks since his inauguration, the bottom is falling out.

Stocks are plunging. Consumer confidence is dropping. Inflation is picking up. Trump himself has refused to rule out a recession this year, and the poor and working class are going to suffer the most.

What worries me even more is that Trump, the ultimate pathological liar and demagogue, will surely try to put the blame on all his favorite scapegoats: immigrants, Democrats, DEI, etc., etc., and we can’t count on the mainstream media to explain what’s causing this disaster, what the results will be, and for whom.

Even before this Trump slump, only the richest 10 percent of Americans had enough purchasing power to keep the economy going with their spending. The bottom 90 percent — including most Trump voters — were barely getting by.

Now, with Donald Trump taking a battering ram to every major institution in America, it’s getting much, much worse.

The cost of living — the single biggest problem identified by consumers over the last several years — is going up, not down. Food prices are rising as Trump’s threatened 25 percent tariffs on Canada and Mexico play havoc with supply chains inside and outside America.

Joblessness is rising as well, as corporations are pulling back from investing in new productive capacity because Trump and Musk’s chaos makes it impossible for them to gauge what the future will bring. And all of this disproportionately affects the working class.
