United States: On Friday, President Donald Trump declared that his forthcoming reciprocal tariff initiative would incorporate a degree of “flexibility,” though he appeared hesitant about granting exceptions to the planned levies.
“Numerous individuals are approaching me concerning tariffs, requesting exemptions,” Trump remarked while addressing reporters in the Oval Office.
“Yet, if one exemption is permitted, the precedent compels the consideration of all others,” he elaborated.
A steadfast proponent of tariffs, Trump reiterated that his stance remained unchanged, even after extending a temporary one-month exemption for major automakers facing prior import duties in early March, according to CNBC News.
“I maintain my position,” Trump asserted. “However, flexibility remains a pivotal concept. At times, adjustments are necessary. Hence, there will be flexibility, but fundamentally, the approach is reciprocal.”
Trump has enthusiastically promoted the April 2 commencement of his reciprocal tariff policy, dubbing it America’s “liberation day.”
