Budget reconciliation is a process that allows Congress to pass bills making changes in tax policy and in basic needs programs like Medicaid or SNAP without risking a Senate filibuster―that means the Senate can pass such bills with only 51 votes, not 60. And that’s exactly what House and Senate leadership are trying to do in order to pass legislation that guts human needs programs by trillions of dollars in order to pay for permanent tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy and corporations.

The budget resolution passed by the House proposes cutting $2 trillion in non-defense spending in exchange for making the 2017 Trump tax scam permanent, a whopping $4.5 trillion hole in the budget.¹ They would pay for some of this $4.5 trillion tax break, mostly for the ultra-wealthy and large corporations, by gutting the funding of critical programs like Medicaid, the Affordable Care Act, SNAP, and other basic needs programs. And they’ll lie about it, saying they’re getting rid of “government waste.”

Trump, Musk and their congressional allies are waging multi-front attacks on our government and communities. They’ve started by making it harder to apply for or renew benefits, by slashing staff and closing offices around the country. The victims? Among them: people with disabilities, older adults, rural residents, low-wage workers, children. That’s just the start, though. This past Thursday they announced plans to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education―which will lead to even more teacher shortages in rural and urban schools while children with disabilities will find their access to essential classroom supports weakened or blocked.² The upcoming bills to pay for huge tax breaks for the wealthy with cuts to Medicaid, SNAP, and other basic needs programs will hurt millions of people. Right-wingers and billionaire campaign donors may want this, but the American people do not. Help us fight back.
