Last week, we watched a police officer murder an American citizen.
My heart broke for George Floyd and his family, as well as for the countless other Black lives lost to police brutality. There is no excuse; we must end this horror immediately.
Across this country, we support those peacefully protesting to demand justice. Here in MI-11, protesters gathered at city hall, where the attending police officers took a knee with them in solidarity.
That’s what we need. Now is the time for constructive dialogue and solidarity, not inflammatory statements and threats of violence.
We must work towards justice and equality more than ever, and legislate to change our culture that results in violence and loss of innocent life. We must address the disparities in our communities, healthcare and justice systems.
I promise I will always be a voice for equality. I hope you will, too.
If you are looking for a way to take action today, I encourage you to donate to the NAACP’s #WeAreDoneDying campaign and sign their petition demanding justice for George Floyd.
In solidarity,
Haley Stevens
