Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski said the quiet part out loud this week.
Her statement tells you all you need to know about why Republicans have surrendered all of their power to Donald Trump:
“It may be that Elon Musk has decided he’s going to take the next billion dollars that he makes off of Starlink and put it directly against Lisa Murkowski. … It’s why you’ve got everybody zip lip, not saying a word. They’re afraid they’re going to be taken down. They’re going to be primaried.”
This is exactly what Donald Trump and Elon Musk want. They are trying to silence any opposition or criticism, so they can get away with handing our democracy to billionaires and corporations.
If they can keep Republican leaders silent, it makes it easier to convince the American people that Democrats’ opposition is just partisanship — while the media feeds the tribalism narrative with headlines about Democrats against Trump.
Trump and Musk know that what they’re doing is illegal. Congress has the sole authority to appropriate money. Dismantling government agencies like USAID or the Department of Education require congressional approval.
If only three Republican senators decided to use their power, we could put a check on Trump, Musk, DOGE and the rest of their illegal power grab.
But instead, Congressional Republicans have taken the cynical position you see frankly from too many politicians in Washington. They stay quiet or vote against what they know is right because they’re more interested in keeping their job and holding onto their power than fighting for the people who elected them. Republicans are so afraid of Elon Musk funding a primary challenge that they’d rather surrender their power.
And let’s be clear: Republicans have surrendered their power. I truly cannot explain it. Why put in all of this effort to run for office to represent your state, only to give up all of your power to a wannabe king and his billionaire friends?
This is why we have to keep sounding the alarm and calling out the stakes of this moment. It’s why I’m so focused on trying to lead a meaningful public opposition.
They are going to call us alarmists or liars. I’ve already seen people try to question my response to this moment, but we cannot let them convince us to back down or believe what’s happening is normal.
We are in a five-alarm crisis, and the only chance we have to stop it is by forcing my colleagues in Washington to realize they have more to fear from the people than the billionaires. I still believe that, if we organize, the American people are collectively more powerful than any corporation or billionaire.
