Dear friends,

The protests and unrest we are witnessing around the country in the last week is, for me and my colleagues at Prosperity Now, the latest, stark example of why the work we do is more important than ever. Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd are the most recent names in our thoughts. The list on my heart is far longer, however, and stretches back decades.

This moment we have been placed in is familiar, but it is not the same. It can have a different outcome, if all of us work harder than ever to actively name and dismantle racist systems and structures wherever we find them – be it in our hallways, our communities, or our institutions.

Prosperity Now is committed to closing the racial wealth divide, and, more broadly, walking alongside the Black community during this time of immense pain and crisis. We see you. We hear you. We stand in solidarity with you in the fight for justice.

We also see our friends and allies in the business, philanthropic, faith, and civil society sectors who fight for justice for the many among us – Latinx, Native, immigrant, LGBTQ, Asian American and more – who have yet to fully enjoy the promise of liberty and justice for all.

We call on local, state, and federal leaders to exercise compassion and restraint against those engaged in protest and civil disobedience. We sit with our neighbors in the Black community in their grief and frustration. We urge our leaders to engage in tangible efforts to address issues of economic equity, housing justice, and police brutality in Black communities.

This moment demands more than incremental change. We need a New New Deal, rooted in policies that create opportunity for all people in the United States to thrive. At the same time, we must actively encourage and uphold anti-racist policies that enable the racial wealth divides in our country to close, not widen.

Prosperity Now will continue to work on many fronts to advance economic justice. We will convene and connect groups on the ground and share resources for organizations and policymakers to continue the fight. We invite you to share these resources widely to engage your colleagues in more intentional and deeper ways than you ever have before. Our lives and futures depend on it. And we are here to help facilitate those conversations, to provide you with tools, to amplify your voices and add our own so that soon, change can only be a forgone conclusion.

With pain and grief comes hope for a better future. The road ahead is long and not one easily traveled. Individuals, organizations, and governments must be willing to engage in the difficult work of systemic and structural change. We hope you will join us.

In Solidarity,

Gary L. Cunningham
