Today, North Carolina’s Court of Appeals considered a case that could overturn a free and fair election. Multiple recounts have confirmed that Republican Jefferson Griffin lost last November’s state supreme court election to Democratic incumbent Justice Allison Riggs. Yet rather than concede, Jefferson Griffin and state Republicans are still suing to try to steal this seat on North Carolina’s highest court — a dangerous, anti-democratic power grab that could have long-lasting consequences. Attorney General Eric Holder put it best:
As a proud North Carolinian, it pains me to witness what’s happening in my state right now. This is just the latest in a long line of attacks on fair elections here. But truth be told, these anti-democratic attacks are not confined to the Tar Heel state — and if Republicans succeed here, you can guarantee they’ll try them in other states across the country. The NDRC is working around the clock to defend free and fair elections. And we’ll keep fighting to elect candidates (including state supreme court justices) who uphold the will of the people — and respect the freedom to vote. We’ve seen how far GOP extremists are willing to go — and because these fights don't stop on Election Days (voting ended in this race over four months ago!), we need to make sure we’re always ready to fight back. A monthly gift is the best way to help our grassroots movement respond to the latest attacks and keep our longer-term work to protect democracy going strong. Thank you, Ted Corcoran
