Trump and his allies are waging an all-out assault on the free press -- one of the pillars of democracy. His Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is working to dismantle PBS and NPR, while House Republicans have introduced legislation to slash funding for public broadcasters.
At the same time, FCC Chair Brendan Carr is going after CBS, NBC, and ABC, accusing them of so-called “bias against Trump.” In Trump’s fantasy anti-democracy, only pro-Trump media is allowed. Meanwhile, Elon Musk and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene are amplifying these attacks, targeting any media outlet that dares to criticize Trump.
This war on journalism is nothing new. Trump’s first term was marked by relentless attacks on the press and a blatant effort to destroy the open internet by undoing Net Neutrality. Now, with the help of right-wing billionaires and extremist politicians, Trump’s campaign to control information is more dangerous than ever.

Musk has openly declared his intent to dismantle public media, echoing Trump’s rhetoric by calling NPR “propaganda” and saying he’s “gunning” for it. Greene, for her part, has demanded that the heads of PBS and NPR testify before her committee, weaponizing government power to intimidate journalists.
If Trump and his allies succeed in gutting independent journalism, the result will be a flood of right-wing propaganda and disinformation designed to suppress the truth and manipulate the public. This is not just an attack on the media--it’s an attack on democracy itself.
Congress must act now to defend press freedom, protect public journalism, and ensure an open internet. We cannot let Trump and his allies control the flow of information and silence independent voices.
