Dear John,

We are honored to welcome Stephen F. Rohde as MPAC’s new Special Advisor on Free Speech and the First Amendment.

A constitutional scholar and retired civil rights attorney, Mr. Rohde has spent nearly 50 years defending civil liberties, winning major First Amendment victories in state and federal courts. Having worked in solidarity with MPAC for over two decades, he brings a wealth of experience and insight to MPAC as we continue to protect the rights of American Muslims and promote justice for all.

Mr. Rohde is the past chair of the ACLU Foundation of Southern California and former national chair of Bend the Arc: A Jewish Partnership for Justice. He currently chairs Interfaith Communities United for Justice and Peace and serves on the boards of Death Penalty Focus and the Black Jewish Justice Alliance.

He is also a prolific writer and speaker, authoring authoring the books American Words of Freedom and Freedom of Assembly and an autobiographical essay, Choosing Life, along with dozens of articles and book reviews in leading outlets including the LA Times, Ms Magazine, Truthdig, LA Progressive, and Los Angeles Review of Books. He co-hosts Law and Disorder Radio and will soon launch Speaking Freely, a podcast on the First Amendment produced by Ms Media.

In response to the recent targeting of Palestinian Americans, Mr. Rohde wrote a contemporary version of the famous Martin Niemoller poem, he calls “First They Came for Mahmoud Khalil ([link removed]) ,” – a reflection on solidarity, free speech, and the urgent need to defend the rights of all communities.

Stephen F. Rohde’s expertise will strengthen MPAC’s work in safeguarding free expression and upholding the core values of our democracy and protecting the rights of our students on campuses around the country. We’re proud to have him as an advisor to our team.

Please join us in welcoming Stephen F. Rohde to the MPAC family.

In Service,

Haris Tarin
