Dear Ward 8 Residents,

We are excited to share that DC Council Chairman Phil Mendelson will host a community meeting right here in Ward 8 this Saturday at 10 AM in partnership with Dreaming Out Loud. This is your chance to speak directly with Chairman Mendelson and his team about any concerns or ideas you have for the District. Your voice matters, whether it’s about public safety, city services, or neighborhood improvements.

Plus, with the weather finally warming up and Cherry Blossom season right around the corner (March 20 – April 13), it is the perfect time to get out and enjoy everything DC has to offer. Take advantage of the events and activities celebrating this beautiful time of year, from festivals to scenic walks.

We hope to see you at the meeting on Saturday. Have a great weekend.

All the best,

The Ward 8 Council Office

Ward 8 Health Council Meeting Discusses Budget Challenges & Advocacy

Jules Jessie, Communications Director for the Ward 8 office, attended the monthly Ward 8 Health Council meeting, where key updates were shared. A representative from Councilmember Christina Henderson’s office, who oversees the Committee on Health, provided insights on the Council’s budget work, the potential Continuing Resolution (CR) that could strip $1 billion from the city’s budget, and the current FY26 budget planning. Wendy Glenn, representing Mayor Muriel Bowser, emphasized the power of advocacy, urging the healthcare providers in the room to testify and advocate frequently for their patients and constituents. She stressed that consistent advocacy is essential to ensuring the community’s needs are prioritized and met.

Ward 8 Strong: Parents, Students, and Leaders Advocate in Record Numbers at Senate Building

Last week, record numbers of Ward 8 residents, parents, students, and community leaders showed up at the Senate building to advocate for DC. Despite the lack of full representation, their presence demonstrated a strong, united voice. A special thank you to all those who continue to advocate for the District.

A Farewell, But Not Goodbye

Eight years ago, I walked into the Council Ward 8 Office as Chief of Staff, and just like that, it is time to say farewell.

It has been my pleasure to serve the Great Ward 8, a community I am proud to call home for my entire life.  During this time, we have accomplished so much together, bringing resources to the block, passing legislation that supports and protects our community, and hosting events that uplift our seniors, families, youth, and small businesses. From senior socials and Valentine’s Day celebrations to turkey and toy giveaways, budget support for small businesses, and direct constituent services, we have worked side by side to strengthen Ward 8.

Thank you for being a thought partner with us every step of the way. While today marks my last day at the Council, I won’t be far away, you will definitely see me around Ward 8.

For now, and always—In Service,

Wanda Lockridge
Chief of Staff
