New! Bison Culture Trunks and Curriculum
Free of charge to all teachers, schools, and similar organizations

Native American education is vital for all students. However, it is sometimes difficult for teachers to bring to life within their classrooms, especially within elementary schools where teachers are tasked with teaching every single subject to their students. The museum’s goal with these new trunks was to help teachers tell the story of the People of the Great Plains in a way that engages students, inspires them, and helps them appreciate different cultures.
The Bison Culture trunk (and the accompanying curriculum) was created to help tell one small piece of the story of the Indigenous People of North America. Native Americans have been living in North America for more than 14,000 years; their history is vast and diverse. This trunk focuses on how the People of the Great Plains used the bison during a roughly two-hundred-year period, from the arrival of the horse on the great plains (mid-1600s) to the near extinction of the bison (mid-1800s). It includes bison items and replicas of period appropriate artifacts like a shield, spoon, drum, arrow, parfleche, awl, bowl, and more. All of these replicas were made by artists using historically accurate techniques, and are great representations of what these items would have looked like during this time period.
The Bison Culture trunk comes with an engaging and educational set of activities that dive into the same time period and topic. We have curated a list of educational videos and created unique classroom activities that can be plugged directly into what teachers are already teaching in their classroom. These activities were created with guidance from Native American Cultural Centers, Wyoming Board of Education, and teachers.
The trunk and the curriculum are offered free of charge to all teachers, schools, and similar organizations. The museum has even created a Virtual Education Trunk with 360-degree photos of each item for teachers from other states.
