It sounds like the title of a bad movie, but it’s not. Trump and the wannabe-kings in our Texas Legislature are waging an all-out attack on our Constitutional rights and protections.
Here in Texas, we watched on Tuesday as Texas House Rep. Carl Tepper and his allies argued that the separation of powers — enshrined in both the United States and Texas constitutions — should be thrown out in order to give unlimited power to the executive branch.
In a House Intergovernmental Affairs Committee hearing, Tepper defended his HB 524, which would give Attorney General Ken Paxton over whether cities can hold elections on ballot initiatives, arguing that, “We are the legislature. We have supremacy … If there is a law forbidding these referendums, then we will be making that decision for the courts.”
At the federal level, Trump has argued that judges who rule against his unconstitutional power grabs should be impeached, and Elon Musk has been donating to members of Congress who support Trump’s view.
This flagrant disregard for the foundation of our country’s rights and freedom is a dangerous trend. We have to do everything we can to fight back, and build both a Texas and United States that delivers on the principles of liberty and justice for all.
Politicians like Ken Paxton and Carl Tepper are resorting to these unconstitutional attacks because our movement is winning. With your help, we can win again in this fight at the Legislature. John, you chip in $25 to power our movement?
