NVFS and SCAN Celebrate Merger and Future of Work Together
Last week, NVFS celebrated the merger of NVFS and Stop Child Abuse Now (SCAN) of Northern Virginia during a reception at the Above ALX Penthouse. It was an opportunity to welcome SCAN supporters into the NVFS family and share NVFS' commitment of protecting children and strengthening families. The evening was also a double celebration as we marked Dave Cleary’s birthday. Dave founded SCAN more than 37 years ago.
Together, NVFS is building on SCAN's incredible legacy of child abuse prevention with the new Child and Family Wellbeing <[link removed]> service area that includes the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) program and Family Programs.
Special thanks to Above ALX Penthouse <[link removed]> and Purple Onion Catering <[link removed]> for their generous venue and food and beverage contributions. Learn more about the merger in this news release <[link removed]>.

Volunteers Help Us Celebrate Read Across America
Thank you to our community partners for celebrating Read Across America Week at our Early Childhood Education programs. Each reading rock star was phenomenal! It's so important for these children to have stories read to them from volunteers and caring community members, in addition to the books their teachers read to them daily. Reading is not only crucial to development, it also fosters language skills, expands vocabulary, boosts comprehension, cultivates imagination, empathy, and a love for learning.
Thank you to the PNC Grow Up Great team; Gaston Araoz, Dominion Energy; Lindsey Crawford, Troutman Pepper; and Sharifa Dickensen, The Association of American Medical Colleges for volunteering to celebrate the joy of reading with some of our littlest learners!

Blog: Celebrating Social Work Month
NVFS celebrates Social Work Month and highlights the valuable services social workers provide in our community. We honor the expertise, hard work and commitment of the social workers on our team. They partner with people and families, sometimes in moments of crisis, to understand their needs and work together to build stability and well-being.

Did You Know? Fun Facts About NVFS' 100-year Journey
NVFS has grown through expansions of services and programs but also through mergers with other nonprofits whose mission and goals align with ours, supporting Northern Virginia residents in their journey to wellbeing.
* In 1964, Alexandria Family Service, known at our founding in 1924 as United Charities of Alexandria, merged with Family Service of Northern Virginia to become Northern Virginia Family Service. Our service area grew beyond Alexandria to include the counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William.
* In 2008, through a merger with the Center for Multicultural Human Services, we launched the NVFS Multicultural Center for Trauma Recovery.
* In 2009, NVFS and SERVE Inc. merged, which created the continuum of human services designed to move families out of homelessness and onwards to greater independence.
* In 2012, The Hispanic Committee of Virginia and NVFS merged, expanding our capacity with programs like housing stability, case management, financial literacy, and small business development.
* In January of this year, 2025, SCAN (Stop Child Abuse Now) of Northern Virginia and NVFS merged to deepen the impact of child welfare services for families in our region, creating the Child and Family Wellbeing program. Learn more <[link removed]>about the newest NVFS program, donate <[link removed]>, or get involved by becoming a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteer <[link removed]>.
Through mergers and expansions, NVFS works to bring the services and programs needed to ensure that all Northern Virginians get the support they need to attain wellbeing, now and for generations to come.
