John,

In less than two weeks, voters will choose the next Wisconsin Supreme Court justice.

I’m proud to support Judge Susan Crawford. She’s a fair, impartial jurist who has dedicated her career to protecting the rights, freedoms, and safety of all citizens. And it was an honor to go back to Wisconsin and campaign for her earlier this week.

I’m all-in on this election because of a basic truth: the outcome will determine if Wisconsin continues to be a beacon of hope in our quest for a true democracy – or not. So I’m asking if you can make a donation today to help elect candidates like Judge Crawford in the Badger State and across the country: [[link removed]]

Wisconsin’s recent history reminds us that no matter how bleak things may look, we can still make change. No matter how tightly some anti-democracy leaders try to cling to unearned power, the will of the people can still prevail — as long as the people have the will to fight.

When we began, the challenges in the Badger State could have seemed insurmountable.

Conservatives had held control of Wisconsin’s highest court for more than a decade.

Republican Governor Scott Walker and his allies had egregiously gerrymandered the state legislature to create artificially large GOP majorities.

And for years, Wisconsinites were forced to live under unpopular policies enacted by those Republican majorities, despite the fact that Democrats saw increasing — and sometimes majority — statewide support.

To be blunt: Wisconsin was governed by illegitimate minority rule.

But the people of the Badger State did not give up. They organized. They voted. They forged a new chapter for their state. And at the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, we had their back.

We helped elect Democrat Tony Evers as governor. And because we knew then, like we know now, that fair-minded state supreme courts are vital to defending democracy, we invested in flipping control of the court, year after year.

I supported fair-minded Wisconsin Supreme Court candidates in 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2023, visiting the state ahead of each of those elections and helping to rally voters. That long game culminated in the election of Judge Janet Protasiewicz in 2023, which broke the conservative stranglehold on the court.

The election was a reminder that in order to protect democracy, we must do democracy.

With a new majority on the bench and Tony Evers serving as governor, the gerrymandered state legislative maps’ days were numbered. Under new, fair maps in 2024, Democrats broke the Republican supermajority in the state senate and flipped seats in the state assembly, creating a path to win majorities in 2026.

It was a new chapter for democracy in Wisconsin.

That brings us to today, John, and the task before us: Electing Judge Susan Crawford and Democracy Defenders across the country.

If the far-right candidate wins, Wisconsin would lose its hard-won, pro-democracy state supreme court majority. The state’s highest court would go back to its extreme past of rolling back rights rather than protecting them.

In contrast, winning this race would mean building on the pro-democracy momentum we’ve worked so hard to create since we founded the National Democratic Redistricting Committee.

And it would continue a model of success that can be applied to some of the most appallingly gerrymandered states today like North Carolina, Texas, Florida, and Ohio.

Our movement has been fighting for fairness state by state, year by year  — we are playing the righteous long game. I hope you’ll support us with a gift today to power the work ahead: [[link removed]]
