Stream Smart Training Phase 1 – Thorndike

This workshop is designed for professionals responsible for road-stream crossings. This half-day introductory workshop provide training for professionals to expand the local knowledge base on how to include aquatic organism passage and higher storm volume capacity when designing stream/road crossings.   

Applying the Stream Smart principles to road crossings can help connect and maintain fish and wildlife habitat while protecting roads and public safety. Stream Smart crossings can also help towns prepare for the large and frequent storm events that have been washing out roads around the state and the northeast.  

Learn about:  


* We will cover road-stream crossing projects from site assessment to permitting and installation.   

* Emphasis is on maintaining and restoring aquatic habitat and economic values of the stream.   

* Workshop presenters include professionals from state and federal agencies and statewide non-profits.   

* Participants can receive recertification credit for Maine DEP's Voluntary Contractor Certification Program.   

Registration is mandatory. Registration is free for all Waldo County Municipalities and $35 for all other participants.

First Annual Mid-Coast Agroforestry Conference

Join the University of Maine Cooperative Extension for the 1st Annual Mid Coast Agroforestry Conference at the 30th Annual Rural Living Day. 

Agroforestry is the intentional integration of trees and shrubs into crop and animal farming systems to create environmental, economic, and social benefits. It has been practiced in the United States and around the world for centuries. In Maine, the most forested state in the country, we rank second nationally in utilization of agroforestry practices on commercial farms with Waldo County leading the state at 12.6 % of farms already utilizing agroforestry practices. Come join the University of Maine Cooperative Extension and practitioners of agroforestry to learn about the benefits of integrating agroforestry practices into your farm or homestead operations or identify new agroforestry based enterprises that just might be suitable for your land or business.  

During the 1st Annual Mid Coast Agroforestry Conference topics covered will include: silvopasture, balsam tipping and commercial wreath production, and much more.  

Registration for the conference also includes attending our co-sponsored event, Rural Living Day, where you can attend workshops on vegetable, seed saving, culinary, and other kitchen garden topics.  

Light breakfast, refreshments, and lunch will be provided.

2025 Maine State Wildlife Action Plan Revision

Maine’s State Wildlife Action Plan (SWAP) [ [link removed] ] serves as our blueprints for proactively conserving fish, wildlife, and plants to prevent species from becoming Endangered. The plan outlines hundreds of Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN), describes their habitats, identifies key threats to SGCN and habitats, and recommends actions to keep common species common and prevent at-risk species from becoming Endangered. 

The plan is revised every ten years to evaluate the health of wildlife populations and identify opportunities to conserve species and vital habitats before they become rarer and more costly to protect. Last updated in 2015, we are now actively working on a 2025 update. 

We want to hear from you! 

We invite you to provide input on the draft Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN) list as part of the collaborative 2025 SWAP Revision [ [link removed] ] process. 

Please take the time to review the current SGCN draft list, as well as the criteria for listing and ranking of SGCN, then *provide feedback using our online form by Sunday, April 20, 2025.* 

Stay tuned for upcoming opportunities to provide comments on the SWAP as the revision process progresses and to continue your involvement in conservation in Maine.
