[1]U.S. Senator Chris Murphy

Yesterday, Donald Trump signed an order that, in his own words, is aimed at eliminating the Department of Education.

Let’s be clear: Doing this without Congressional approval would be illegal. But everything we’ve seen from Trump and Musk makes clear that he is going to try nonetheless — consequences be damned.

But I want to talk about why he’s doing this. It has nothing to do with helping kids learn or empowering teachers.

No, this is about destroying public schools. It's about selling off our public schools to corporations and private equity companies so schools can be run to make a profit instead of to educate our kids.

The billionaire class and private equity want to get their hands on the education system in the same way they’ve done with our health care. They want to use the same playbook to squeeze the system for every penny it’s worth — while the rest of us pay the price for a broken system.

These people do not give a crap about your kids or public schools. All of their kids go to $50,000/year private schools. They already know they won’t feel the impacts — the same way that they don’t worry about cuts to Medicare, rural hospitals closing or longer wait times at the VA.

There are two systems in this country. The one for billionaires and elites who have limitless resources and influence, and the scraps that they leave for everybody else to fight over.

Now you may hear Republicans try to lie that the entire Department of Education is not being shut down. And that’s sort of true because, don’t worry, they’ve made clear that they intend to continue collecting on student loans. Because again, this is all a reverse Robin Hood. They know they can continue to saddle young people with high-cost debt, and they’ll use the profits off young people trying to pursue education to better themselves to cut taxes for corporations and billionaires.

Our kids will pay the price if Trump is able to succeed. This is why it is so important for us to keep the pressure on my colleagues.

If there are town halls or protests near you, show up and participate.

Every best wish,

Chris Murphy
