Fleeing violence and chaos, thousands of people are arriving at our southern border seeking asylum. But instead of finding safety and opportunity, migrant children and families are being detained at private prison camps, and their basic human needs are being denied.

Children are being held without access to soap, clean clothes, or adequate food in overcrowded border facilities unequipped to provide proper care.

Under law, individuals in government custody must be held in safe and sanitary facilities. But Trump’s team of lawyers are arguing that safe and sanitary conditions don’t include things like beds, blankets, toothbrushes, or even access to medical care.

Over the past few weeks, we have seen horrific images of a drowned migrant father and daughter attempting to cross the Rio Grande to seek asylum, packed concrete-floored cells, and children in extreme distress. This is unacceptable and does not reflect American values.
