Friend, Yesterday, Donald Trump signed a sweeping executive order aimed at gutting the Department of Education – and with it, the future of public education in America. Make no mistake: this is a direct attack on students, teachers, and families in every community across the country. The Trump administration’s plan would eliminate critical programs that serve 50 million students nationwide – all so billionaires like Elon Musk can keep cashing in on massive tax breaks. What does that mean in real terms? ❌ It means crowded classrooms where kids don’t get the attention they need to succeed. ❌ It means slashed funding for special education, leaving students with disabilities without essential services. ❌ It means fewer mental health counselors and school nurses when students need support more than ever. ❌ It means higher tuition and fewer pathways to college and career training – especially for working families already struggling to get by. ❌ It means stripping away civil rights protections that safeguard LGBTQ+ students, students of color, and students with disabilities from discrimination and harassment. And it’s already happening. School districts in low-income and rural areas are bracing for massive budget shortfalls. Programs that help students prepare for good-paying jobs are on the chopping block. Entire generations could lose out on opportunities that should be guaranteed to every child in this country. This isn't about efficiency. It's not about accountability. It’s about dismantling public education to funnel more money to the ultra-wealthy. It’s about selling out our kids to serve a billionaire agenda. Congress must reject this. We need to protect the freedom to learn and demand a safe, inclusive, and fully funded public education system for every child. Public education is one of the most fundamental promises of our democracy. We can’t sit quietly while Trump and his allies try to tear it apart. Together, we can stop this. But we need you with us. Thank you for your advocacy. Alana Byrd
