Hello from St. Paul,

As you are likely aware, Minnesota’s economy is on the decline, as we are now projected to face a $6 billion budget deficit during our next budget cycle.

There’s no doubt some tough spending decisions will need to be made to help balance the books. One of the more common-sense ways we can cut state spending is to stop handing “free” money to people who are not here legally.

A top priority last session for Governor Walz and a Democrat-led legislature was to waste hundreds of millions of your tax dollars to pay for free health care and free college tuition for illegal immigrants.

New House legislation would eliminate this spending. It would prohibit illegal immigrants from receiving state-funded financial aid, grants, subsidies, or other taxpayer-funded assistance. It would also ban sanctuary cities, strengthen immigration enforcement, and ensure that criminals who are here unlawfully are held accountable.

With an $18 billion budget surplus, forcing legal Minnesotans to pay for these illegal immigrant “freebies” was a stupid decision. With Minnesota now facing a significant budget deficit, there’s no doubt it’s time for these programs to go away.

*RESTORE ELECTRONIC PULL TABS TO HELP LOCAL CHARITIES *

Those of you who play electronic pull tabs may have noticed some significant changes recently. And the local organizations who benefit from the charitable gambling revenue created by the games are going to notice as well.

In 2023, Governor Walz and legislative Democrats approved a law eliminating the “open all” feature that made the electronic pull-tab games popular. It took a year and a half to implement the new law as e-pull tab technology without the “open all” feature did not exist in the United States.

On January 1, the new e-pull tabs were unveiled across the state. The results have been lackluster, as the decline in play has ranged from 20% - 44% statewide, depending on the reporting organization.

Here’s why this is problematic. Last year $386 million was generated in net revenue from the gaming devices, and the charitable gaming proceeds from them were distributed to needy organizations in our communities. If you were to project a 30% decline this year, those relying on charitable proceeds in Minnesota - EMS groups, food shelves, youth sports teams and associations, Boys and Girl Scouts, and other local charities – could expect a $115 million annual loss due to the electronic pull tab change.

A bill is moving forward in the House that would bring electronic pull tabs back to their original – and successful – form. I support it, as it’s a pretty easy change that will benefit all of our local charities.

In liberty,

Drew
