I won’t sugarcoat it — this was a tough week to be a lawyer committed to democracy and the rule of law. Yes, there were some important legal victories, but two troubling trends continue to accelerate in the wrong direction.
At nearly every turn, major law firms are capitulating to Donald Trump. The latest — and most shocking — example is Paul Weiss. When the firm was targeted by a Trump Executive Order, many expected it to fight, especially since another large firm, Perkins Coie, had already won a temporary pause on a nearly identical (and even weaker) executive order.
