OK Senate Republicans Pass Bill to Make Your Vote Count for Less
John,
Somewhere along the way I picked up this crazy idea of "one person, one vote." And apparently that is controversial. Because Oklahoma State Senator David Bullard (R-Durant) believes that some Oklahomans' votes should matter more than others.
On Tuesday, every OK Senate Republican voted for SB 1027. This bill would overhaul the petition process and require 80% of all signatures to place an initiative on the ballot to be gathered from counties other than Oklahoma and Tulsa.
Because Sen. Bullard disagrees with a number of the voters in these counties, he went and created a system where the signatures of some Oklahoma voters matter more than others.
You might be noticing a pattern from the Legislature. Over the years they've passed several laws to restrict how certain Oklahomans they disagree with can govern themselves. Now they're trying to dilute the votes of Oklahomans who don't live in their districts.
Senate Democrats pushed back aggressively against this bad bill on the floor, but still every single Republican Senator voted to make some voices matter less.
The next step for this bill is to be approved by a yet to be announced House Committee before a deadline in early April. So now is the time to call your State Representatives and ask them to protect the equality of all voters' signatures! [[link removed]]
Meanwhile, Democrats are doing the hard work of reaching out and earning votes instead of disenfranchising our neighbors. OKDEMS is helping knock doors around the state to elect folks who know that every vote should count equally.
This weekend you can help us reach voters for Special Election candidates in Owasso [[link removed]] and Okmulgee! [[link removed]]
You can help today by making your voice heard at the State Capitol, by joining our campaign actions, or by making a contribution to flip seats at the State Legislature and elect Democrats who know their job is to honor voters instead of undermining them.
In Solidarity,
Alicia Andrews
