This victory wouldn’t have been possible without you, friend.
“Chimps like Al are at Chimp Haven.” with a happy chimp below
Friend, we have great news to celebrate with you. Thanks to your action, 10 surviving chimps from the Alamogordo Primate Facility—a federally owned laboratory in New Mexico, where chimps had been used in harmful research experiments, some for decades—are now living at Chimp Haven sanctuary! Now, they can begin to heal from the years of trauma and pain they suffered in the Alamogordo facility. This victory wouldn’t have been possible without compassionate advocates like you, who stuck with us in this years-long fight.
Between Humane World Action Fund and Humane World for Animals, tens of thousands of supporters joined us in pushing the National Institutes of Health to comply with the Chimpanzee Health Improvement, Maintenance, and Protection Act, a law that created a federal sanctuary (operated by Chimp Haven) where federal-owned chimpanzees could live out the rest of their lives after the experiments on them had ended. When NIH walked back their commitment and refused to release the chimps, you demanded action and we worked with members of congress to pressure the agency to do the right thing in order to secure the safe and comfortable retirement these incredible animals deserve.
Now, Al and his fellow survivors are settling in at Chimp Haven, a lush forest sanctuary dedicated to providing the medical care and environmental conditions that will allow these chimps to thrive for years to come. The remaining survivors from the Alamogordo laboratory will join them at Chimp Haven soon!
But we can’t celebrate without also grieving the loss of every chimp who died while confined to barren, distressing facilities, waiting for NIH to do the right thing and release them to sanctuary. We are so grateful to have supporters like you with us through these important moments. Together, we can continue to act to end animal cruelty and help create a safer, brighter future for all animals.
Thank you for your compassion and action,
Sara Amundson

P.S. As you read this, there are still government owned chimps in laboratories. They’re suffering from the trauma of animal research and need the healing that Chimp Haven can provide. Will you make a donation of $20 or more today to help us keep fighting for the remaining chimpanzees and all the animals who need us?
