The Texas Historic Preservation Tax Credit (THPTC) program is a state initiative that incentivizes the rehabilitation of historic buildings by offering a 25% tax credit on eligible expenses. Established by the 83rd Texas Legislature in 2013, the program became effective on January 1, 2015, and has since driven significant private investment in preserving Texas' architectural heritage.
Over the past decade, it has certified 496 completed projects out of more than 1,100 applications, generating $5.3 billion in total investments, with $3.9 billion qualifying for tax credits.
Historical markers are a key part of the Texas Historical Commission's (THC) efforts to preserve and share the state's rich history. They cover many topics, from the stories behind historic homes and buildings to the history of local churches, military sites, and significant events. Additionally, they recognize the contributions of influential individuals and organizations that have shaped Texas communities.
The 2025 application window is now open and closes on May 15. Visit the THC website for helpful guides and resources.
